Q4. What is expected from the companies involved in EIGS?

What is EIGS?

The Enterprise for Innovative Geospatial Solutions (EIGS) is a cluster of programs and companies working to further develop the geospatial industry in Mississippi. With more than 35 high technology companies, and research programs from four universities within the Mississippi Research Consortium, EIGS encompasses both the science and the business of geospatial technology. By supporting both entrepreneurs and researchers, EIGS strives to make Mississippi the home of the U.S. geospatial and remote sensing industry.

EIGS’s unique structure and efficient use of multiple funding sources, enables it to meet the constantly changing needs of this new emerging technology sector. EIGS provides its industry cluster members with both access to geospatial and remote sensing research as well as complementary business and marketing support. EIGS was established in 2003 to provide similar but enhanced support previously provided by its predecessor, the Mississippi Space Commerce Initiative (MSCI).

What is geospatial technology?

Geospatial technology is the science and technology of gathering, analyzing, interpreting, distributing and using geographic information. Geospatial technology encompasses a broad range of disciplines that can be brought together to create a detailed but understandable picture of the physical world and our place in it. These disciplines include:

  • Surveying

  • Mapping

  • Remote sensing

  • Geographic information systems (GIS)

  • Global positioning system (GPS)

How will EIGS fit into other efforts supporting geospatial technology and remote sensing in the state?

The University of Mississippi recognizes that all efforts in the state will be most effective if there can be maximum coordination within the MRC and among other entities working hard to build geospatial and related technology clusters in our state. There are too few resources and too much at stake. The University is making every effort to foster conferences and other information sharing sessions to help encourage the efficient use of public funds and ensure minimum duplication of effort. The EIGS web site hopes to further this effort and EIGS supports efforts at the state and federal level to ensure that separately funded programs are coordinated closely.

What is expected from the companies involved in EIGS?

EIGS Companies are expected to:

  • Have a Mississippi presence;

  • Attend the EIGS Annual Meeting;

  • Keep EIGS staff informed of developments of interest and importance to the cluster;

  • As requested, provide timely and accurate company contact and product information; and,

  • Annually provide EIGS with economic data about their company's Mississippi operations including, but not limited to: average salary, total salaries, total revenues, and total investment.
